Class Description:
This course is designed for elementary education majors to integrate music into various educational content areas. It includes hands-on music activities and group discussions on classroom management strategies for instrumental play settings.

About the Students:
These students were elementary education majors who are interested in incorporating music into their classrooms. This cohort has not been extensively introduced to instrument playing or music theory, but they are interested in incorporating beginner-friendly music activities for teaching elementary students.

Lesson Topic:
This lesson is designed to incorporate practical examples of instrumental activities for elementary classroom, which can be adapted for teaching various subjects. Students engaged in music activities, discussed on the teaching approaches, and collaborated with their peers to explore ways to incorporate them into their future classrooms.

Fall 2024- Recorder and Literacy in Music Class-General Music Unit

Class Description:
This course is designed to develop competencies for teaching elementary general music classes. It includes discussions on strategies for teaching the recorder to first graders.

About the Students:
These students were juniors in the music education program. This particular cohort is exploring methods for implementing musical activities in educational settings.

Lesson Topic:
This lesson is designed to incorporate practical examples of purposeful recorder activities and literacy for the general music classroom. Students participate in music activities and then brainstorm with their peers about how they might use these activities in their future classrooms.

Fall 2024- Applying Kodály to General Music- Emphasis in Elementary General Music

Class Description:
This course is the last music education course these students take before student teaching. These students have chosen elementary general music as their “emphasis” and plan to focus on elementary general music for student teaching for job seeking.

About the Students:
These students were seniors and they chose to specialize in teaching general music class. They have limited experience working with students in a teaching setting and are eager to learn hands-on activities that they can implement in their future classrooms.

Lesson Topic:
During this class students learn about the fundamentals of Kodály. Today’s class aims to provide active learning on the structure of Kodály lessons, sequencing, and resources for future use in their own classrooms. I also share with the class how I used Kodály in my own classroom. The end of this class focused on activities or questions that students have brought up previously.
